This is Van Gogh's last painting in Paris before leaving for his date with destiny in Arles. I happened to see it on display in Rome. (I'll weigh in on that later). Can you spend ten minutes looking at it? Let your eye roam around the painting.

He looks tired and lonely. He's so focused on his work. I love his texture, brush strokes, and the movement he creates in his artwork.
He looks tired, perhaps even overwhelmed by the work he faces. He holds every paintbrush in his kit, as though emphasizing the myriad decisions he faces to create a painting. It's as though he's asking, "Now what?" His signature, "Vincent 88" is on the frame on the back of the canvas he is working on. It's sloppy, and he even seems to run out of space as he reaches the edge of the surface. I never saw that before. Though colorful, the colors are less vibrant than his later works. Overall, this portrait gives me an uneasy feeling that a storm is coming, but that might just be because of what I know about his fate.
